Text | Reed had his base given to him by the mistake of the umpire. He had hit the ball to Mitchell, who picked it up nicely and sent it to Whiting, the latter holding it clearly, and touching Reed with it before he reached the base; but in the act of touching him, the ball was knocked out of Whiting’s hand, and the umpire erroneously declared him “not out”. When the ball is once held, the knocking it out of the player’s hands does not change the play at all, as it frequently happens that the collision sends the ball out of the fielder’s hands. |
