Text | [Troy vs. Metropolitan 7/22/1882] Mansell was on second and Reilly at first when Reipschlager hit up a high ball, which fell easily into the palms of Pfeffer’s [short stop] hands, who held the ball a moment, but let it rebound in the air and then fall on the ground, when Pfeffer at once picked it up near second base, and, touching Mansell–not entitled to hold the base–put his foot on second, forcing Reilly out. The crowd on the free stand, not understanding the point, began to hiss the umpire, and they jeered him all through the game... |
