Text	[from answers to correspondents] A man is on first base. The batter hits a grounder to first baseman, who picks it up, touches his base, and then fields it to second to cut off a runner. Is the runner allowed to return to first, and must he be touched with the ball to put out, or must he continue on toward second, having been forced off first? [answer:] The runner at first is forced off that base as soon as the batter bats a fair ball, and can not return. If the second baseman holds the ball on second before the runner gets there the runner is out.
