Text | The largest crowd that ever witnessed a base ball game in New York and probably in this country saw the first game at the Polo grounds between the New York and Detroit clubs. At least 30,000 people were present. The crowd was so great that the game could not be played until a reserve of police had been called out and the crowd forced back from the field. Even then there was not room enough to properly play the game. The excitement was intense throughout and it appeared to be bordering on a riot at one time. |
