Text | A great many people imagine that a catcher’s failure to hold a foul tip, when he is close up to the bat, is an error. This is a mistake. The time between the moment the ball touches the bat and his hands is so short that it can not be calculated, and certainly gives the catcher no chance to change the position of his hands. If the course of the ball is not changed by the tip, the catcher usually secures it, but a failure to do so does not constitute an error. St. |
