Text | [Unions of Laningburgh vs. Atlantics 6/6/1870 at the Capitoline Grounds] Popping a foul over to left field, Wildey [the umpire] determined that no fault should be found with him for not calling out in distinct tones, and shouted “foul” so loudly that Charley Mills, who was playing over on the other ground [the Union Grounds] and had just made a good hit over third base, ran back home and came near being put out before he discovered his mistake. The Mutuals and Eckfords were bothered all through their game by Wildey's loud shouting, and request that on the next occasion he will moderate his tones a little. |
