Text | [Indianapolis vs. Boston 8/14/1878] Leonard, in the seventh inning, hit the ball about ten feet in the air, close to the foul-line between home and first. It struck the ground fair, and then bounded out. As it was not a “ball batted directly to the ground” the runner earned his base, even if it did go out foul. |
