Text | Al. Pratt and Jim White faked up the first pair of catcher’s gloves ever worn, and Jim was the first man to wear them. Jim was much younger than he is now; but his hands were sore. He and Pratt dropped into a store on Broadway, New York, and purchased an old-fashioned pair of buckskin gloves. They cut the fingers off the gloves, split them and inserted lacing until they had a pair of catcher’s gloves to their liking. If they had had an idea to what extent base ball player was going to grow, they could have made a ten-strike by getting a patent on them. New York Sun April 25, 1887, et al. |
