Text | The St. Louis Missouri Democrat, May 21, 1861 prints a may 16 letter from the camp of Wilson's Zouaves, on Staten Island, NY: "We found a majority of the force engaged in exercise--some at base ball, some at leap frog--others running, boxing, exercise..." Zouaves were dressed in the style of the North African light infantry of the French army--short red coats, baggy pants--very colorful. |
