Text	Lave Cross says: “The first thing I learned to do when I commenced to catch was to chew tobacco. I don’t see how a man can catch a game without a chew of tobacco in his mouth. The principal reason is that in order to hold a ball you have got to keep your gloves damp constantly. If they are dry you couldn’t hold a twister and would have a half dozen passed balls in a game. Of course there are exceptions to this rule, but the only three in the country I know of are Bushong of Brooklyn, Cook of Louisville and Daniels of Kansas City. They use water to dampen their gloves, but it is not nearly as good as tobacco.
