| Text | [reporting on the NL meeting of 3/7] The league meeting in New York yesterday was full of bitter disappointments to the base ball public of St. Louis. It was confidently expected all along that Mr. Lucas’ disqualified players would be reinstated, but they were denied forgiveness and forever shut out from playing with a national agreement club. Even the privilege of playing Sunday games and of charging 25 cents admission was denied Mr. Lucas. In fact he received nothing but the cold shoulder. To have thrown up his membership then and there would no doubt have been his best policy. The reinstatement of the old favorites who stuck by Mr. Lucas was demanded by the St. Louis public, and any club he could get together, however strong in playing strength it might be, would not be popular with these men out. However, the engagement of a strong team by him is out of the question. For him to play in the league with a weak club, playing no Sunday games and charging 50 cents admission, is bound to prove a losing venture. It would be much better for him to retire from the league altogether. (St. Louis) |
