Text | [Chicago vs. St. Louis 5/22/1877] In the fatal third inning, when Chicago made the runs which won the game, Smith hit a bounder to Clapp [first baseman: he normally was the catcher], which was juggled for an instant, during which McGeary [second baseman] covered first. Had John been familiar with the position he would have anticipated just such an occurrence, but thinking he had lost the man he held the ball and Chicago thereby scored a victory. St. |
