Text | ...[the Chicago] nine is practiced chiefly in fielding, when they need practice at the bat, it being a well recognized maxim of the game that anybody can field reasonably well, but that batting is what wins the games. … Let the members of the nine practice at the bat to the exclusion of fielding, when they practice at all, and they may yet rank well; but let them continue their present course of training, and at the end of the season they will drop to a position very low in the scale. |
