Text | [Mutuals vs. Athletics 8/29/1870] The proprietor of the Union Grounds tested the popularity of the game of base ball yesterday by charging fifty cents for the privilege of witnessing a contest between the Mutual Club, of new York, and the famous Athletic Club, of Philadelphia. The experiment was a great success, as four or five thousand people were present—the interest felt in the result of a game between these two clubs being extraordinary. |
