Text | [the Athletics approaching the end of their western tour] ...on the ride from Cleveland to Erie, Father Hayhurst asked the boys whether they felt like continue their trip. He had received invitations from Rochester and Syracuse, asking us to visit these cities. A vote was taken, and it was decided to continue the advance from Buffalo, but no farther, the Fourth of July was looming up and the patriots desired to be at home on the anniversary. Johnny Kahmer–resolute, decided Kahmer–alone voted nay to the proposition to proceed further. Father Hayhurst said, “I have no arguments to urge in favor of the proposition. Here are the telegraphic communications. Act on them as you see proper.” Johnny Kahmer’s argument was that we had lost the services of Reach; that the players were tired; we had fulfilled our contract; and that it was time to return home. It was decided to proceed. |
