Description | CUBAN Baseball apparently was born in June of 1866, when an American ship anchored in Matanzas Bay to load sugar. One day the U.S. sailors invited the Cubans to play a game they called baseball. Cubans joke that the Americans were motivated at least in part by a desire to sell baseball equipment; nonetheless, they helped build a baseball diamond at Palmar del Junco, where the first baseball games in Cuban history were played.
