Text | "On the boisterous playground he took his unavoidable risk of . . . being knocked breathless by a hard ball in 'Sock-about.'" Venable, W. H., A Buckeye Boyhood (Robert Clarke, Cincinnati, 1911), page 57. Per Seymour, Harold - Notes in the Seymour Collection at Cornell University, Kroch Library Department of Rare and Manuscript Collections, collection 4809. Seymour's annotation says that the book "covers 1836 to 1858 life on Ohio farm." Note: Are we confident that "Sock-about" is a baseball-like game, and not a strong form of a schoolyard game like dodge ball? |
