In summer 2013, Protoball moved to support additional research on the local origins of base ball by displaying information about work already under way at the local and state level. The first group we became aware of is the Rochester (NY) Baseball History Society (see above link).
We plan to add, on this page, listings of other groups that are trying to fill in gaps in knowledge about the earliest appearances of modern base ball in particular areas, and whatever local predecessor games are known.
At this point, we are aware of current or potential interest in local origins in Arkansas, Boston, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Canada, Chicago, Hawaii, Houston, the Hudson Valley, Iowa, Maryland-Eastern Shore,New Jersey, Northeastern Massachusetts, Minnesota, Northern California, the Pacific Northwest, Rhode Island, Rochester, St. Louis, and Western Massachusetts.
If you want to foster some local digging in your area, let us know.
