Description | "Although San Marino is completely surrounded by Italy, the country has been able to carve out its own baseball identity. According to San Marino's baseball federation, baseball first took hold in this country of only 30,000 people in the 1960s when local residents returning from the United States began expressing a passion for the game." Josh Chetwynd, Baseball in Europe (McFarland, 2008), page 224. San Marino is a land-locked area near the Adriatic Sea, at about the latitide of Florence. In a footnote, Chetwynd advises that others see Italy's own interest in base ball as the impetus for the recent rise in popularity in the enclave nation. |
