Description | The New Orleans Times Picayune, Sept. 5, 1943, under the headline "South American Baseball" reports "An Ecuadorian named Jorge Phillips, who learned his baseball in New Jersey, went back to his home in Ecuador bent on establishing a baseball team. He ... organized not one but several ball teams..." in Quito, the capital. However, Quito is so high up the air was too rarified to throw a good curve ball. This Phillips anecdote is also reported in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Nov. 5, 1943. |
