Description

During Spalding's 1888-89 world baseball tour, they played a game in Ballarat Dec. 29, 1888, with the All-Americans beating Chicago 11 to 7. Zeiler, Ambassadors in Pinstripes p. 73.

Ballarat was the center of the Victoria Gold Rush of the 1850s and beyond. The town was founded in 1871. The gold rush attracted many American prospectors, who (presumably) were familiar with baseball. Some sources suggest (without definite proof) that American miners played baseball here as early as 1857.
