Example club entries here and here	<p>The "Spirit of the Times," Dec. 17, 1864, reports on a Thanksgiving Day game in Vicksburg between two nines of the Mississippi Valley BBC. Wentz's nine lost to Tawne's nine, 18 to 6. The article gives a complete box score with the players' names. Note--Julian A. Wentz (1842-1914) was a civilian railroad man born in NY, who came to Vicksburg during the civil war to help run the military railroads there. It is presume that the other ballplayers were civilian government employees. The Vicksburg Daily Times, November 13, 1866, reports: &ldquo;A game of Base Ball came off yesterday at the Arsenal grounds&hellip;. Messrs. Wentz and Borden were captains of the rival sides.&rdquo; The New Orleans Times, December 27, 1866 says the Mississippi Valley Base Ball Club of Vicksburg has come to New Orleans to play. Note--H. and W. Borden played in the 1864 game cites above.</p> <p>The <em>Vicksburg Herald</em>, Oct. 15, Oct. 21, 1864 notes practice games of this club. Same Dec. 10, 1864 reports on a meeting of this club.</p> <p><span>The Daily Herald, November 26, 1864, stated the following:</span><br /><br /><em>The prize nines were dressed in the uniform of the club, which consists of black pants and white flannel over shirts trimmed with blue. As they appeared upon the ground, they presented quite as fine and lively a body of young men as we have seen assembled together for such a purpose since the days we were want to gather with ball and bat on the 'Village Green.'<br />The Captains of the nines were Mr. J.H. Towne, Jr., of Adams' Express Company and Mr. Jule Wentz, of the U.S. Treasury Department of this city. The play was exceedingly well conducted by both parties in the best spirit of emulation, and many of the players called forth the applause of the spectators. The Umpire, Mr. A.A. Dewey, of the U.S. Treasury Department, performed his duty in a most admirable manner, and to the entire satisfaction of all concerned.</em></p> <p>Vicksburg (1860 pop 4,591; 1870 pop. 12,443) is on the Mississippi River about halfway up the state's western border and about 40 miles W of Jackson, which is near the center of the state.</p>
