Text

[Atlantic vs. Eureka 7/26/1864] "On the Atlantic side, however, a new member of the nine 'put in an appearance' in the form of 'Picket,' the well known pitcher of the champion club last season, who played at right field in this game, picket duty being new of a man who has hitherto had sole charge of the battery of the regiment he belonged to."

Comment

From finder Richard Hershberger: "Not a completely clean use, as Chad is having fun riffing off the name and the use of "battery" gets included in his pun cascade.  But still....  Dickson [The Dickson Baseball Dictionary, page 86, citing the Chadwick Scrapbooks] has first use of "battery" as 1868."
