Description | The Chicago Tribune, Nov. 26, 1870, reports that the Field & Leiter Wholesale nine played the "Volwarts" (? newspaper illegible here) club. The opposing club may be the "volevideers", another club of Field & Leiter employees. Marshall Field and Levi Leiter were partners in what was to become Chicago's biggest department store, Marshall Field's. According to Freedman's article on early Chicago baseball, Field & Leiter sponsored five different teams. Their silent partner, Potter Palmer, also sponsored a team. I've entered this as "Leiter & Field" because the system got confused by the word "Field" and tried to put this under the category ball field. |
