[St. Louis vs. Brooklyn 5/19/1886] ...from the beginning to the end of the game Mr. Clinton [the umpire] never stepped inside the diamond, in fact never got nearer than ten or fifteen feet of the plate, but still decided men out or not out at first, second and third bases, he being anywhere from one hundred and five to one hundred and thirty-five feet away.
