Text	[from answers to correspondents] The striker had no right to attempt to make second base until he had re-touched first base after overrunning first base, and had he been touched by the ball, in the hands of a fielder, before he had so re-touched first base he was out. The umpire was wrong. The privilege accorded in the rule is simply that of being allowed to return to the base without being put out, and not that the base runner has the option of returning and touching the base or not. Were this the right interpretation. Fo the rule, what is there to prevent the striker every time he overruns the first base from turning to his left and running half way down to second base?
