Description

The formation of the Geddes club, and its officers, was announced in August 1860.

In April of that year, a group in Geddes had declared its intention to play old-fashioned base ball: We will play any ten in the city at the "old fashioned game of base ball" (italics); the game to be not less than 75 more more than 100 tallies."

The August announcement made clear that the club was formed "for the purpose of playing the new game of Base Ball." The baseball clippings of the Onondaga Hist. Assn. have no reports of games involving Geddes clubs until 1865.

The Syracuse Central City Courier, April 24, 1860 reports that last Thursday the Camillus club defeated Geddes twice, at Geddes. [ba]

Geddes is about 5 miles NW of Syracuse, near the western shore of Onondaga Lake. In 1859, its population was 950. It is now a suburb of Syracuse with a population of about 17,000.
