Description

The return game of the series for the colored championship of the United States between the Pythians of Philadelphia and the Mutuals of Washington, D.C., was played on Thursday, Aug. 24th on the Athletic's ground, Philadelphia. The first game was played on the same ground on the 12th of August, and resulted in a victory for the Pythians by a score of 20 to 15, they earning 9 runs to their opponent's 2, although the Mutuals' fielding was much superior to the Pythians. In the return game the Pythians failed to bat as well as in the previous game, and had all the chances that were offered been accepted, they would have only scored four runs and made out eleven base hits, while the Mutuals, by strong batting, earned every base they made and earned nine runs in all. The fielding of the Pythians was visibly improved, and although the Mutuals fielded about as well as in the previous game, yet some very loose play in the sixth innings lost them this. The most noticeable feature of the game - which was wonderfully exciting towards the close - was the fine catching of Adkins and the first base play of Hanley, of the Pythians, and the splendid throwing to bases of Tyler, the ctacher of the Mutuals, and the fine second base play of Jordan. The following is the score of the game which was impartially umpired by Mr. Halbach.
