Description

Morris et. al., "Base Ball Pioneers. 1850-1870," p. 126, notes that the Penfield Club of Oberlin College defeated the Forest City BBC of Cleveland, 67-28, on Oct. 20, 1865 in Cleveland. In a game the next year, Forest City defeated the Penfield. David Zang's bio of Fleetwood Walker, pp. 20-22, says the Oberlin team had a black 1st baseman in 1865, making it the first multiracial team we know of.

William Castle of Hawaii, who attended Oberlin 1864-66, recalled in his memoirs he played baseball there and introduced the "new" game to Hawaii.

The Oberlin Alumni Magazine, vol. 21, no. 8, has two reminiscences of "Early Baseball" at Oberlin. Says the Penfield club was formed in the fall of 1865 and took its name after the local mfr who supplied them with bats. Further, that there was among the students a Columbus Cricket Club which that fall switched to playing 11-a-side baseball.

Win/Loss Records As Far As We Now Know

Warning: Users should not rely on a team's won-loss record as a reflection of its "standing" among all base ball clubs. Team schedules were not balanced, and a good record against mostly weak opponents does not signify a leading club.
