Description

Students at the University of Virginia organized a baseball club there soon after the war. The Monticello’s of the university played the Excelsiors of Staunton June 1, 1866 at Charlottesville, winning 42-5. Valley Vindicator, June 8, 1866. According to the Spalding Scrapbook, NYPL, the Monticello club of the UVA sprang into existence April 14, 1866, citing the NY Mercury, Dec. 30, 1866, article titled "The Baseball Season of 1866."

Virginia U. Monthly, May/June 1868 says the Monticellos defeated the Excelsiors of Greenwood twice in a home-home series.

Charlottesville VA (current pop. 43,500) is about 70 miles NW of Richmond.

Staunton VA (current pop. about 24,000) is about 35 miles W of Charlottesville.
