Description

The Auburn Daily Union, Aug. 14, 1860 reports that the Logan BBC was formed the evening before, with John T. Baker as president.

Same, Sept. 24, 1860 reports on a game of the Logan BBC on the Fair Grounds, Wilkinson's side vs. Brigham's side.

Same Oct. 1860 says the Logan club lost 26-6 to the Union Springs BBC at Union Springs. The Logan players claimed they were thrown off their game by the uneven playing field.[ba]

Sabrpedia--The only known ref to the Logan Club of Auburn is in a Syracuse paper in October 1860.

The club did not play a game in this account, but hosted one in Auburn, which was is roughly half way between Syracuse and Union Springs NY, the homes of the contesting clubs.

The article also states that the Logan club put up $20 for the winner of the game that day. As far as we know, this is a unique event in early CNY base ball.

The baseball clippings collection of the Onondaga Hist. Assn. reveals no games played by the Logan Club, tho' Auburn clubs played games after the war.

Auburn NY is about 25 miles WSW of Syracuse. It is interesting but irrelevant to mention that Auburn was the home of Abner Doubleday, of Civil War note, and of William Seward, who, as Lincoln's Secretary of State, brought Alaska into the American sphere of influence. Auburn's population in 1860 was about 11,000.
