Description

The Honolulu Pacific Commercial Advertiser, Aug. 5, 1858 prints an Aug. 4th letter describing the July 31st "Restoration Day" festival: "The best thing I saw on the [Waikiki] plains was a game of Base Ball, for it was got up impromptu ..."

Same, Sept. 8, 1859: "bat and ball is being introduced among the natives and bids fair to become a favorite game..."

These references may be to wicket or other predecessor game, but the specific mention of "base ball" is significant.
