Description

The Dickson Baseball Dictionary, p. 885, says that in 1837 Canton, Illinois, outlawed playing "town ball" on Sunday. This undoubtedly sources swan's 1871 history of Canton, p. 100, which quotes an 1837 ordinance banning the Sunday play of "bandy, cricket, cat, town-ball, corner-ball, over-ball, fives, or any other game of ball..." with a penalty of a $1 fine. .
