Description

The Louisville Daily Courier, April 23, 1859, prints a "Letter from Camp Floyd," Utah Territory, which reads in part: "The amusement of camp consists now of horse-racing, base ball, cricket, etc., and draws crowds of idlers."

Camp Floyd was a short-lived army camp/post, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City, where the soldiers of the "Mormon Expedition" of 1858-60 camped. A shanty "town" grew around it. It was soon abandoned.
