Description

Owen's "History of Alabama," vol. 1, p. 69: "very soon after the reorganization of the university [of Alabama] in 1871, baseball aroused the interest of the students, who early caught the contagion of the great national game. Dr. James K. Powers, later president of the university, was captain of a base ball team during the first session after reorganization. During the period from 1872 to 1884 several clubs were organized. In 1878 a record is preserved of the Hiawatha, the Pastimes, and the Calhounites. Games were played under the Spalding rules."

James Knox Powers, born 1851, graduated from the university in 1873. It is unknown whether the Hiawatha club of 1878 was the name of this 1872 team.

The University of Alabama's official college team played its first game in 1892, under coach Shelby Fletcher.
