Description

For possibly the first home run whose distance was estimated (if not actually measured), see the following account of a game between the second nines of the Charter Oak and Vigilant clubs on 28 June 1859 on the Charter Oak grounds:

. . . Home runs were made by Jerome and Sweezy [1b and ss for the Charter Oaks]. Jerome made a most splendid bat of over 350 feet before the ball struck the ground. . . .
