Description	On August 30, 1856 the Knickerbocker and Empire clubs played to a 21-21 tie in eight innings in a match at the Elysian Fields. While the Knicks positioned themselves as a conventional nine--three "fielders," one "behind," three basemen, a shortstop (the inventor Adams himself), and a pitcher, their opponents elected to use no shortstop and TWO men playing "behind."
