In August 2017, in response to a query from the Baseball HOF, we revisited this unusual find.  Bruce Allardice later reported (email of 8/12/2017):  

"Larry:

There were RR connections east. But the traffic was more in riverboats west.
BTW I found no mention of this Oct. 1857 game in the 1857 Pittsburgh newspapers. That doesn't mean it wasn't played.

Bruce's general point was that in 1857, Pittsburgh was more regularly connected to Ohio Valley locations than those in the eastern USA.
