|Text=<p>After examining nearly 200 regiments, the Sanitary Commission was reported to have found that “in forty-two regiments, systematic athletic recreations (foot ball, base ball, &amp;c) were general. In one hundred and fifty-six, there were none. Where there were none, card playing and other indoor games took their place. This invited gambling abuses, it was inferred.</p><p>“War Miscellanies.
