LOCAL AFFAIRS THE BASE BALL TOURNAMENT Grand Match Game Between the Hastings and St. Paul Clubs The Latter is Triumphant..The Scene closes with a friendly banquet

The grand match game between the North Star Base Ball Club of St. Paul and Vermillion Club of Hastings, came off yesterday at the grounds of the former club on Pine Street. The Vermillion Club gentlemen came up on the McLellan in the morning, and were entertained at the International Hotel. The forenoon was rainy and unpleasant, but about noon the weather cleared up. The game commenced at two o'clock. A very large crowd of spectators were present, and great interest was felt in the game.

The ground had been carefully prepared by the North Star Club. The bases had been packed with sawdust, which made the footing pretty good, notwithstanding the rain in the forenoon.

The members of the Vermillion Club were dressed in a very neat uniform of flannel--pants blue, shirts white, belt and a white cap. The uniform of the North Star Club is blue flannel throughout, with white caps and a black belt. In physique the two clubs were about equal, and the game was very closely contested. Some fine playing was done on each side, and the spectators remained very patiently to the close of the game, some three hours. It was interrupted once by a heavy shower of rain, but even this could not drive away the lookers-on. The following is the score of the game:

Batting North Star H.L. R

W. Wilson 1 7 R.C. Olin 1 6 C. Wilson 1 7 F. Paine 1 5 C. Dailey 2 5 R.A. Lanpher 2 5 Theo. Borup 1 3 H. Wilson 1 5 Thos. Lark 1 6

(totals) (11) 49

Vermillion S. Greiner 1 3 J.C. Norton 1 1 S. Jones 1 2 John Heath 1 2 Robert Torrence 1 3 J.E. Finch 1 2 John Kinsey 2 1 Geo. Marshall 1 1 Wm. DeKay 1 1

(totals) (10) 16

Number of tallies made in each inning

North Star 2 0 2 17 1 10 3 7 7 = 49 Vermillion 0 0 2 3 4 2 1 4 0 = 16

Umpire: Walter Cowles (of Hastings) Scorers: Dr. T.R. Potts, O.T. Hayes

From this it will be seen that the Hastings Club were again the losers. But they played excellently, and against any but such a really splendid Club as the North Star, would have succeeded.

In the evening, at 7 1/2 o'clock, North Star Club entertained their guests at the International Hotel, with a fine banquet, got up in the usual elegant style of that House. We have never been at a more pleasant entertainment. The best feeling prevailed, and all enjoyed it greatly. Song and jest, speeches and champagne all circulated without limit.

The Vermillion Club gentlemen went down on the Itasca last night, well pleased, as they warmly expressed themselves, with the manner in which they had been entertained. They are a most excellent and clever set, one and all. It has never been our good fortune to meet gentlemen more deserving the name, in every particular, and we hope they will again visit our city at no distant day.

Note: I do not quite understand the hands lost totals of 10 and 11....I would think they would be 27 each in a nine inning game.

Hastings MN is about 20 miles SE of St. Paul and 25 miles SE of Minneapolis.
