Description | BASE BALL. It may not be generally known to your readers that Halifax has lately taken up the American game of Base Ball; and as our American cousins last year came to Halifax to play us at our national game of Cricket, we will, I trust, be able next summer to show a very good front against them in their own game of Base Ball. Although not as scientific a game as Cricket, yet as a gymnastic exercise it is equal to it. Early in the present summer, the "Halifax Base Ball Club" was formed, and a few weeks after, in order to improve, a rival Club, taking the name of the "Independant," came into existence, and after a little practice, the two Clubs met on Saturday, the 27th of July, when the "Halifax" proved the victors by 22 runs. On Saturday, the 7th of September, the return match came off, with a different result, the "Independents," having improved very considerably, and having also the addition of a superior pitcher, won by 8 runs. This being a game each, another match came off on Saturday, the 21st Sept., when both parties did their best to win, in order to make the best two out of the three games. Both sides were strong and confident of success, but again the "Independents" carried off the victory, and we must say it was not for want of exertion on the side of the "Halifax," for their fielding was very good, but chiefly owing to the superior pitching of Mr. Keeling, of the "Independents." We advise both Clubs to keep up their practice, and we expect by next year to find this a very popular game in our city. Dr. T. H. Pryor, of the "Halifax" Club, kindly acted in the important position of umpire. |
