Hall, "Northern Sandlots: A Social History of Maritime Baseball", pp. 13-14: "On May 7, 1868, a group of about a dozen young Haligonians met at Doran's Hotel on Sackville Street and Bedford Row to organize the Halifax Baseball Club and prepare for the upcoming season... A second club, the Independent Baseball Club, which had competed earlier against the Halifax Club, held its organizational meeting a couple days later..." The first informal game had been held July 27, 1867, won by the Halifax Club 77-55 over 7 innings. A return match on Sept. 7, 1867 had the Independents winning 39-32 in 9 innings. The Sept. 28th rubber match had the Independents winning 33-28. |
