Description

The Los Angeles Star, March 24, 1860: "Base Ball Club--A club has been formed in this city, for the promotion of the manly art of base ball playing. About fifteen members have been enrolled, who are shortly to inaugurate the sport."

The Los Angeles Star, Saturday, April 7, 1860: "The Base Ball Club of this city was duly organized this week, by the election of officers, adoption of constitution, by-laws, &c. On Wednesday afternoon [April 4], they had a fine time of it, and on Monday next they will again take the field."

Same, April 21, 1860, page 2: "Foot and Base Ball...The Base Ball Club is, of course, in flourishing condition--the members always eager for a hand. They have had several days exercise, and the game is becoming popular..."

Los Angeles was founded in 1781. It had 4,385 residents in 1860, 5,728 in 1870 and 11,183 in 1880.
