Text | [Indianapolis vs. Cincinnati 8/1/1877] The visitors took serious exceptions to a decision of the umpire, wherein Jones ran against Mack in the fifth inning to get his base. The truth was, however, that Mack [shortstop] was squatted in the path between Jones and the bag, and was in the act of receiving the ball when Jones ran against him trying to reach the base. No umpire in the world could have decided otherwise, as no fielder has a right to the path, unless he holds the ball before the runner reaches him. |
