Description

The Chicago Tribune, July 27, 1867, has an extensive article on the State base ball convention. Among the teams sending delegates were the Aurora and Black Hawk BBCs of Aurora. The Black Hawk delegates were O. C. Lathrop and A. W. Stolp. The latter is Allen W. Stolp (1841-94), of the prominent Stolp family of Aurora, who was later manager of the Stolp Woolen Mills. The former is Orvis C. Lathrop (1840-84), a lawyer.

This club played the Kendall of Yorkville on the 31st of August.  Kendall County Record, Aug. 29, 1867. And probably played Elgin that month.  Kendall County Record, Sept. 5, 1867.

The American Chronicle, June 11, 1868, reports that on the April 4th annual meeting the Blackhawk Club chose O. B. Knickerbocker as president.

This team had disappeared by 1870. See Aurora Beacon, July 27, 1870.

Comment

Probably named for the Black Hawk Mills of Aurora.

!868-70 the Aurora Beacon contains notices of very few match games by organized BBcs, but a lot of games by improvised company teams. Cf. Kemp's Harness Makers vs. Squires and Sons (7-16-68); Town clerks vs. Shop Boys (9-24-68); Dry good store clerks (Molasses team) vs. Grocers (Red Tape team) (6-22-70); East division of Aurora vs. West division (6-25-70); Muffin clubs of Aurora (7-13-70).

Win/Loss Records As Far As We Now Know

Warning: Users should not rely on a team's won-loss record as a reflection of its "standing" among all base ball clubs. Team schedules were not balanced, and a good record against mostly weak opponents does not signify a leading club.
