Location Boston, MA, United States
Nine Class Senior
Description

Boston Traveler, May 2, 1857 mentions a practice game of this club.

We think this club played only the Massachusetts game.

See the game accounts from 1853, 1855 and 1856. Earliest match game is reported in the  Boston Daily Bee, Sept. 8, 1853. [ba]

There was an intersquad game played by this club on the Commons, July 4, 1853. It was 10 a side, denominated "bass ball." See Boston Daily Bee, July 2, 1853 [db find, entered by ba].

Comment

[from a biographical sketch of George Arnold:] In the Spring of 1851 he came to this city and began work with the firm of James Munroe & Col, booksellers. The years following, he, with the late Mr. Albert S. Flye and a few young men, used to meet on the Common as early as five o’clock, a.m., to play ball; here we may trace the origin of what was afterwards known as the “Olympic Ball Club of Boston,” and no doubt the first Club organized in New England. It was formed in the Summer of 1854. Mr. Arnold took an active part in organizing the same. [New England Base Ballist, Aug. 27, 1868--see Hershberger clippings]

Warning: Users should not rely on a team's won-loss record as a reflection of its "standing" among all base ball clubs. Team schedules were not balanced, and a good record against mostly weak opponents does not signify a leading club.
