Description

The Washington, DC Critic Record, Jan. 16, 1872, reports: "The citizens of Key West enliven the present heated term by playing base ball."

Key West was a US naval station. Northern-born sailors may have introduced the game there, and earlier than 1872.

Elias, "The Empire Strikes Back" p. 1880 says
In 1887, the Key West League in Florida was formed by exiled Cubans."
