|Comment=
The match was the first in the Championship series for 1862. It was reported that the winner of the series would receive the Silver Ball trophy which was designed an paid for by the Continental Club of Brooklyn. The trophy was initially to be presented to the champion of the 1861 season; however, the start of the War (Civil War) forced the trophy to be shelved until the 1862 season.

About 5,000 attended the match, a few thousand were allowed inside the grounds, in which a small entrance fee was charged and reported to be for the benefit of the Sanitary Commission.

After five innings, the Atlantics held a 14-9 lead. The Eckfords, behind the pitching of Andrew Mills, did not allow the Atlantics to score in the final four innings, while they posted 11 runs.
