Description | The New York Herald, Dec. 18, 1871: "Yokohama, Nov. 2, 1871.... The first base ball match ever played in Yokohama came off on the 26th ult., between nine American residents of this place, and a picked nine of the United States Ship Colorado." The sailors won 14-11 in a game called on account of darkness after 4 innings. Nobby Ito of Japan baseball says this game was actually the 30th. The North China Herald, May 20, 1879, reports on a recent base ball game between a team of the USS Monongahela, "and a Yokohama team" won by the sailors 15-10. Is this the first ever ballgame in Japan? |
