Description | The Chicago Tribune, Aug. 3, 1870, has a long (and humorous) story of a game at Ogden Park (at the corner of Ontario and Michigan, where the White Stocking often played) between two teams of the social elite, the Alpines and the Sugar Loaf. 2000 spectators watched the "wealthier class of Chicago gentlemen" play, including a shortstop who stopped grounders with his ample stomach, by rolling on the ground in front of them! |
